Requesting Read Receipts (Outlook 2003)

Here's how to request a read receipt for a specific message, for all messages to a specific recipient, or for all your messages.


To request a read receipt for a specific message, click the Options button on the toolbar in the message, check the Request a read receipt for this message checkbox, then click Close.


To request a read receipt for all messages to a specific recipient, create a rule:

  1. In Outlook, select Rules and Alerts... from the Tools menu.

  2. On the E-mail Rules tab, click New Rule... .

  3. In the Rules Wizard dialog box, select Start from a blank rule..., then Check messages after sending.

  4. Click Next.

  5. Under Which condition(s) do you want to check?, select Sent to people or distribution list.

  6. In the lower pane of this dialog box, click people or distribution list and select one or more recipient addresses.

  7. Click Next.

  8. Under What do you want to do with the message?, select Notify me when it is read.

  9. Click Next.

  10. Under Are there any exceptions?, select any applicable exceptions.

  11. Click Next.

  12. Enter a name for your rule.

  13. Click Finish.


To request read receipts for all your messages, change your Outlook preferences as follows:

  1. In Outlook, select Options... from the Tools menu.

  2. Click the Preferences tab.

  3. Click the E-mail options... button.

  4. Click the Tracking options... button.

  5. Check the Read receipt checkbox.

  6. Click OK three times.
