Moving the Menu Bar and Toolbars

By default, the menu bar and the Standard and Formatting toolbars are “docked” at the top of Excel’s application window (the window Excel itself runs in). You can “undock” the menu bar or any docked toolbar and drag it to a new location on the screen, either letting it float above your workbook or docking it on one of the sides or at the bottom of the application window. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Rest your mouse pointer on the raised vertical bar at the left end of the menu bar or any docked toolbar. Your mouse pointer changes into a four-headed arrow.

  2. Press and hold the left mouse button and drag the bar out of its dock, to any location on the screen. If you drag the bar to the top, bottom, left, or right edge of the screen, note that the bar tries to dock itself there automatically.

You can restore a floating menu bar or toolbar to its last docked location by double-clicking anywhere on its title bar.
