Entering Fractions

To enter a fraction in an Excel worksheet cell, first type 0 (zero), then the fraction: 0 1/20. (If you leave the zero out, Excel will format what you entered as a date: 20-Jan.)

Another way to enter a fraction is to type a decimal number and apply the Fraction format to the cell, like so:

  1. Enter a decimal number, such as .0625.

  2. Right-click the cell and select Format Cells from the menu.

  3. Click the Number tab, if necessary.

  4. In the Category list, select Fraction.

  5. In the Type list, select Up to two numbers.

  6. Click OK. Excel formats what you entered as 1/16.
